As with many things in life these days, it all started with an episode of the Peter Attia podcast. In this edition, our nation’s most Badass Doctor was interviewing a guest I initially dismissed as not overly applicable to my own lifestyle. A young, excessively handsome dude who happened to be a writer with a new book out. But the headline of the episode was just intriguing enough to get me to click. “The Comfort Crisis” Wow, what an amazing turn of phrase, and what a concise summary of the core of this whole Mustachianism thing I’ve been trying to express…
As stocks plummet and recession fears grow, there’s one silver lining worth highlighting: the increasing value of your home, if you own one. A home is a fundamental necessity for survival, stocks are not. So, the government sacrificing your stock portfolio to strengthen or preserve your housing situation can be seen as a net benefit. Many of us are scratching our heads wondering why President Trump and his administration would intentionally tank the stock market and push the economy into a recession with new tariffs. After all, about 62% of Americans own stocks in some form, according to Gallup. Meanwhile, the poorest…
I am 53 years old. Never in my life have I allowed myself to buy a car I truly love…until now. This is the story of how I allowed myself to make a huge purchase just for the joy of it. And it wasn’t even a purchase I’d intended to make. Let me explain. During the peak of the pandemic (early July 2020), I paid $35,990 for a used 2019 Mini Countryman SE All4. The Countryman — which I call a “Maxi Cooper” — isn’t a bad car, but I regretted buying it almost immediately. I’d intended to replace my…
Whoa, have you seen what just happened to interest rates!? Suddenly, after at least fourteen years of our financial world being mostly the same, somebody flipped over the table and now things are quite different. Interest rates, which have been gliding along at close to zero since before the Dawn of Mustachianism in 2011, have suddenly shot back up to 20-year highs. – Which brings up a few questions about whether we need to worry, or do anything about this new development. Is the stock market (index funds, of course) still the right place for my money? What if I…
I remember the first time I filed my taxes. I was dropping something off at the post office when I saw tables full of cardboard boxes filled with forms with the now-familiar IRS eagle and scales logo. Tax season! Those boxes were so intimidating. I was so scared of filing my taxes wrong and getting audited. Fortunately, a friend of mine told me that I didn’t need those forms. There was software for that now and the software was really good. I used TurboTax for many years before transitioning to an accountant when my business required it. Looking back, the…
– The thing that drew me to early retirement is freedom, and that’s still the best part of it. Back in 2005, the primary reason for this freedom-seeking was being able to devote my best hours to being a Dad – I had a feeling my career in tech would be too demanding to sustain once the full-time job of raising children kicked in. Eighteen years later, wow has that guess ever turned out to be right. Early retirement has proved to be the most amazing, worthwhile adventure and it’s still just getting started. It was an astonishing thirteen years…
Interactive Brokers Group reported a solid first quarter for 2025, with revenue growth but a slight miss on earnings expectations. Interactive Brokers Group (IBKR 0.50%), a global electronic brokerage firm, released its Q1 2025 earnings on April 15. The report highlighted substantial growth and a strong operational performance, despite slightly missing market estimates. The company reported earnings per share (EPS) of $1.88, below the forecast of $1.92, but up from $1.64 in the previous year. Non-GAAP revenue also grew year over year by 14.8% to $1,396 million in Q1 2025, although it fell short of the $1,408 million analysts had…
Creating an investment game plan is a crucial part of building lasting wealth. Without one, you’re likely to accumulate far less over your lifetime. Now that the S&P 500 briefly corrected by 20% in 2025, we’ve officially entered another bear market. Historically, bear markets have lasted about two years on average, but this one is likely to be much shorter given it is self-inflicted. One reason I pinned my post How I’d Invest $250,000 Cash Today is because I get this question constantly. The amount doesn’t have to be $250,000 in cash, but any amount of money. It’s my real-time roadmap and…
– The other day, an MMM reader stopped by and left the following comment on one of my older posts about the principles of FIRE: “While I still find some of MMM’s advice relevant, it seems like every FI blogger out there worked in tech 20 years ago, pulled down a 6 figure salary and bought a house for a bag of potatoes before 2019. I wasn’t smart enough to find FI when I was young so I sometimes feel like a lot of their advice is not going to help me or others who don’t already own a home…
